Think you are too old? No way! There are 80-year old folks who keep regular contact via email. My uncle is one of them. Age is no excuse.

But, you may think, the language--- domain names, hosting, email. The Internet is so confusing! Admittedly, there is a lot to learn. It does not happen all at once. You will learn day-by-day. I believed that, too. But for the majority of people, it takes time and work! It does not come overnight. However, there are some basic things that are very easy! For example, if you decide to build a web site (add files, pictures, ideas to a site, there will be more steps, but you do not need to do all of this today). In fact, to get started, you just need to do the first TWO steps!

EMAIL

ISP Email

Before you purchase your first domain name you will need email. You need a way to receive the information about your purchase. An “address” where you get your receipt for the sale. Generally, this email address is through your Internet Service Provider (ISP). The ISP is the company you go through to connect to the Internet (modem, DSL, cable) such as America Online, Earthlink, Cox, Bellsouth, and so forth. So, the first step is to have your email address ready and up-to-date. Make sure you can receive email. You may want to send your self a test email message, if you haven’t used it in a while, to make sure everything is working correctly. For email assistance, contact your service provider.

FREE Email Services

But, what if you found this “Strike It Rich” site at the library while doing research? What then? Does this mean you can not be a part of this Internet bonanza? Of course not. There are plenty of places that provide FREE email. Note: It is highly recommended that you use a “tried and true” email source rather than free email. Some free email services have filters that may need to be changed to accept mail from specific addresses. However, if you have no idea where to get started, you might try searching the web for free email.

DOMAIN NAME

Now we are getting to the fun part! You are ready to begin your truly first step in the Internet domain name game. You realize that, just like the lottery, not everyone profits. But, some domain names are becoming nearly priceless. So, why wait. But, before we start, what in the world, is a domain name?

The domain name is what you type in the top of your web browser, when you are browsing to different web sites. For a more specific explanation, go to the Strike It Rich Web FAQ. An excerpt: “The domain name is the address people type in their browser to get to your Web site. So, your domain name points to your site to allows users all across the Internet to view your Web pages“. However, it is frowned upon to just “sit on” a domain name (cyber-squat) as the main purpose of a domain name is to point people to a web site.
